BYLAWS OF THE ______________ CHAPTER OF GAMMA IOTA SIGMA ARTICLE
I
Name
The name of this
Chapter shall be the _____________ Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma. ARTICLE
II
Purpose
The purpose of
this chapter shall be to promote, encourage, and sustain student interest in insurance,
risk management, and actuarial science as professions; to encourage the high moral and
scholastic attainments of the chapter members; and to facilitate interaction of the home
educational institution and the business community by fostering research activities,
scholarship, and improved public relations. ARTICLE
III
Membership
Section 1. Initiation by this Collegiate Chapter into
membership in the national professional fraternity Gamma Iota Sigma and this Chapter shall
be as either (a) a COLLEGIATE member, or (b) an ASSOCIATE member.
Section 2. Undergraduate or graduate students of
___________________ interested in the study of insurance, risk management, and actuarial
science are eligible for membership as COLLEGIATE members.
Section 3. Staff and faculty of _________________ engaged in
research, instruction or administration of insurance, risk management or actuarial science
facilities or activities shall be eligible to join Gamma Iota Sigma as a COLLEGIATE
member. A staff/faculty member shall be
entitled to all of the privileges of fraternity membership except serving as an officer of
this collegiate chapter.
Section 4. Any person, not eligible for COLLEGIATE
membership, who is interested in insurance, risk management or actuarial science and the
purpose of the fraternity, shall be eligible for ASSOCIATE membership. An ASSOCIATE member may not vote or serve as a
chapter officer.
Section 5. COLLEGIATE members meeting Grand Chapter approved
criteria, at the discretion of the _________
Chapter Advisor, may be awarded the Membership with Academic Distinction
Designation. ARTICLE
IV
Fees/Dues
Section 1. Initiation fee is __________. ($30 is due Grand Chapter with completed
application form immediately upon member joining chapter.)
Section 2. Annual chapter dues are _________ payable by
October 1. ARTICLE
V
Officers
Section 1. The officers of the Chapter shall be a President,
a Vice President, a Secretary, a Treasurer and such other officers that the Chapter may
elect or appoint. These officers shall
perform the duties prescribed by these bylaws and by the parliamentary authority adopted
by the Chapter.
Section 2. At the first regular meeting held in April and
October, a Nominating Committee of five members shall be elected by the Chapter. It shall be the duty of this committee to nominate
candidates for the offices to be filled at the last regular meetings in the Spring and
Fall Quarters respectively. The Nominating
Committee shall report at the first regular meetings in May and November. Before the elections at the last regular meetings
in the Spring and Fall Quarters, additional nominations from the floor shall be permitted.
Section 3. The officers shall be elected by ballot to serve
for six months or until their successors are elected, and their term of office shall begin
at the close of the meeting at which they are elected.
Section 4. No member shall hold more than one office at a
time, and no member shall be eligible to serve more than two consecutive terms in the same
office. ARTICLE
VI
Meetings
Section 1. The regular meetings of the Chapter shall be held
on the first and third Saturday of each month while classes are in session unless
otherwise ordered by the Chapter or by the Executive Board.
Section 2. The last regular meetings of the Spring and Fall
Quarters shall be for the purpose of electing officers, receiving reports of officers and
committees, and for any other business that may arise.
Section 3. Special meetings may be called by the President
or by the Executive Board and shall be called upon written request of five members of the
Chapter. The purpose of the meeting shall be
stated in the call. Except in cases of
emergency, at least three days notice shall be given. Section 4. A quorum shall consist of five active student
members, provided at least ten percent of such members are present or represented by
proxy, but at no time shall the lack of a quorum prevent those present from proceeding
with the study planned for the meeting. ARTICLE
VII
The Executive Board
Section 1. The officers of the Chapter shall constitute the
Executive Board.
Section 2. The Executive Board shall have general
supervision of the affairs of the Chapter between its business meetings, fix the hour and
place of meetings, make recommendations to the Chapter, and shall perform such other
duties as are specified in these bylaws. The
Board shall be subject to the orders of the Chapter, and none of its acts shall conflict
with action taken by the Chapter. Section 3. Unless otherwise ordered by the Board, regular meetings of the Executive Board shall be held during the second and fourth week of each month while classes are in session. Special meetings of the Board can be called by the President and shall be called upon written request of two members of the Board. ARTICLE
VIII
Committees
Section 1. A Finance Committee composed of the Treasurer and
the President shall appoint four other members promptly after election to office. It shall be the duty of this committee to prepare
a budget for the Presidents term of office, and to submit it promptly to the
Chapter. The Finance Committee can from time
to time submit supplements to the budget.
Section 2. A Program Committee of five members shall be
appointed by the President promptly after election to office, whose duty it shall be to
plan the program of the Chapter during the Presidents term of office. This committees report shall be submitted
promptly to the Chapter for its approval.
Section 3. The President shall appoint a Membership
Committee of five members promptly after election to office. This committee shall be responsible for planning
and executing a membership program oriented toward increasing the active membership of the
Chapter.
Section 4. An Auditing Committee of three members shall be
appointed by the President at the Chapters May and November meetings, whose duty it
shall be to audit the Treasurers accounts at the close of this term of office and to
report at the last meeting in the Spring and Fall Quarters.
Section 5. Such other committees, standing or special, shall
be appointed by the President as Chapter or the Executive Board shall from time to time
deem necessary to carry on the work of the Chapter. The
President shall be ex officio a member of all committees except the Nominating Committee. ARTICLE
IX
Faculty Advisor
Section 1. The Faculty Advisor shall attend the meetings of
the Chapter, aid and advise the Chapter, and shall be responsible for the continuity of
records and of other property of the Chapter. The
Faculty Advisor shall not be entitled to vote, to hold office, to penalize, or to veto,
and shall not be liable for actions taken by the Chapter.
Section 2. The Chairperson of the Department of Insurance at
________________ shall recommend each May a faculty Chapter member who is qualified to
serve as Faculty Advisor. A Faculty Advisor
shall be elected by ballot at the last regular meeting of the Spring Quarter to serve for
one year or until a successor is elected, and the term of office shall begin at the close
of the meeting at which elected. ARTICLE
X
Parliamentary Authority
The rules
contained in the current edition of Roberts
Rules of Order Newly Revised shall govern the Chapter in all cases to which they are
applicable and in which they are not inconsistent with these bylaws and any special rules
of order the Chapter may adopt and any statutes applicable to this Chapter. ARTICLE
XI
Amendment of Bylaws
These bylaws can
be amended at any regular meeting of the Chapter by a two-thirds vote, provided that the
amendment has been submitted in writing at the previous regular meeting. |
